Stunning View from El Peñol Rock and Beautiful Guatape Town

We took a trip to Guatape (in Antioquia, Colombia), 2 hours from the city of Medellin. Guatapé is one of Colombia’s most picturesque towns and is famous for its beautiful pastel-colored paintings and for its cobblestone streets.

El Peñol Rock

The area hosts the famous El Peñol Rock, at 7,000 feet (2,100 meters) above sea level. The view at the top is stunning; we admired the Guatapé Lake, one of Colombia’s largest lakes, and numerous water inlets and what might appear as separate lakes. This is one large lake that was dammed back in 1970 for hydroelectric purposes. It provides a large percentage of the electricity for Colombia.

The Rock of el Peñol or La Piedra Del Peñol is a massive monolithic rock structure made up of quartz, feldspar and mica and visible from miles around the countryside. There are a number of breaks in the rock; one of these breaks was used for the construction of the 649 step masonry staircase that leads to the top. At the top of the rock are a few small souvenir shops, a restaurant, and the viewing platform, which offers a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside.
